1. Legend

The Sochi region and the adjacent Black Sea coast have an ancient history, as evidenced by archaeological excavations in the region. Pre-antique times, antiquity, early and late Middle Ages left their traces here.

The Sochi lighthouse is one of the oldest buildings in the city. The ships of ancient civilizations and different continents came to its light.

At a historically indefinite point in time, five unknown ships arrived at the lighthouse to study the area. The expedition, not finding the pier, ran aground and was forced to abandon and abandon their vehicles at the foot of the Lighthouse.

Over time, the water receded, the coastline increased, the city developed, and the ships, drowning in greenery, turned into mysterious objects of the city. During the day they reflect the sun, and at night they shine with a soft warm light, entering into dialogue with the Sochi lighthouse.

Time and the course of events have left their mark on the metal sheathing of ships.

Having succumbed to the influence of the environment, one rusted, the other faded, the third was burnt, the fourth faded, and only the fifth remained in its original form.

The legend is not a historical reference, it is an alternative artistic fiction of the concept of the emergence of residential buildings.

2. Concept

Five fictional ships of another civilization, in essence, are five villas on one of the oldest streets in the city, leading to the marina. The villas are located in the historical center of Sochi overlooking the Black Sea, the yacht harbor, the Sochi sea terminal.

200 meters to the Black Sea and a few minutes to the main promenade of the city, the embankment "Mayak".

Just like every ship has a name, so our objects have a name - Steel wing. This is a reference to the material and shape of the object. The form makes it possible to reflect on what the ships that came to the lighthouse were. Every ship that runs aground is partially submerged in the ground. And this speaks of the time: the event happened a long time ago, the earth managed to rise. With this gesture, we connect our house with the steep relief on the site. The attitude to the difference in heights suggested how to arrange the internal space. Upon entering the villa, we find ourselves in the living room space cascading down the relief. This is the most active part of the house, where we meet guests and spend most of our time.

Thanks to the cascading layout, we automatically get zoning, while not erecting additional structures - partitions. Four tiers - four functional areas. The first tier is a hall and a wardrobe. The second is the kitchen. The third is the dining room. The fourth is the living room. Each zone has its own connection to the street. Weather permitting, we can combine the outdoor pool and living room area into one, thereby blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor space. Each living room has a 360 degree view. Privacy is ensured by blackout roller blinds. Each plot has a hedgerow on the south side, which also provides privacy between the neighbors' houses. From the living room we can go down to the minus first floor along the ramp. There are located: a guest bathroom, a laundry and an area for storing equipment such as: barbecue, sun loungers, umbrellas, sun loungers, skis, snowboards, etc. The second and third floors of the villa acquire isolation and are only spaces for the owners. These are bedrooms, wardrobes and bathrooms. All bedrooms have sea views and their own balcony or terrace. Above the terrace there is a translucent canopy made of perforated metal. Perforated metal fits into the interior and it unites the interior and exterior space. Under the perforated panels, there is a lighting and lighting system that gives general light to the rooms and at the same time serves as a decorative illumination of the facade in the dark.

All of the above together make the design of the villas unique. The shape of the ship gives the complex a sign, recognizability and character. This brings the "Steel wing" closer to the object of art.

3. Additional materials

In this block, details of the project are revealed, such as: finishing materials in the interior and exterior, landscaping, indoor lighting and outdoor lighting. All examples have a degree of convention and need additional elaboration at the next design stage. The final choice of finishing materials for floors and walls, furniture, lighting should be discussed with the future owner of the villa. Special attention should be paid to landscape gardening and landscape design - the selection of green spaces in accordance with the conditions of their growth, the installation of small architectural forms, the arrangement of staircases, fences that should not overlap the views of neighboring land plots. The overall illumination and illumination intensity of the territory of all villas must be made in the same style and calculated by a specialized organization - the selected lighting contractor.

Applied materials

Corten, black painted metal, white painted metal, concrete, aluminum glass, oak board.
